Paper 4 is the speaking paper of the HKDSE English Language exam, and it is the one paper you cannot fix by memorising model answers. It rewards how you actually think and talk on your feet — which means the only real preparation is structured, spoken practice. This guide walks through what the exam is, how it’s assessed, and a sane way to prepare, and links to deeper breakdowns of each part.
What Paper 4 is, in plain terms
Paper 4 carries roughly 10% of your overall English grade. It comes in two parts. Part A is a group interaction: after preparation time, you discuss a topic with three or four other candidates. Part B is a short individual response, where you speak on your own on a related question. The whole thing is over in minutes, but those minutes ask for skills that take months to build — listening, responding, structuring a thought quickly, and keeping going under a little pressure.
How it’s assessed
Examiners listen for four things: Ideas & Organisation (do your points make sense and hang together), Communication Strategies (do you engage, respond, and keep the discussion moving), Vocabulary & Language Patterns (range and control), and Pronunciation & Delivery (are you clear and easy to follow). Notice what is not on that list: a perfect accent, or the most advanced vocabulary you can cram. Clarity and genuine interaction beat showing off.
The honest way to prepare
Three principles carry most students further than any trick:
- Speak every day, in short bursts. A few minutes of talking out loud beats an hour of reading model answers. Speaking is a physical skill; it improves with reps.
- Rehearse the format, not just the content. Practise the actual shape of Part A and Part B, with real preparation time and a proper “take,” so exam day feels familiar.
- Get honest feedback, not a guessed grade. You improve fastest when someone shows you the two things you did well and the one thing to fix next — what we call a coach’s draft, anchored to the assessment domains, never a predicted grade.
